The Traill County Sheriff's Office is located in Hillsboro, ND. The office is in the building connected to the court house, and also contains the Public Safety Answering Point or the 911 Center.
The Traill County Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement services for all 863 square miles of Traill County, to include all of the cities within its boundaries. The primary role of the Sheriff's Office is to preserve the peace and order throughout the county through enforcement of Federal, State, and local criminal laws, as well as enforcement of traffic laws, patrol activities, and civil process.
The Sheriff, currently Sheriff Steve Hunt, is an elected position. Elections are held every four years. The office is currently allocated 9 Deputy Sheriff positions and 5 (911) Dispatch positions.
The Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) or 911 Center answers all 911 calls for both Traill and Steele counties. They are responsible for dispatching all law enforcement, fire departments, and ambulance services for both counties.
Traill County no longer operates a jail. Inmates are housed out of county.
